Steps without their own occupation are described from the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook.
How do you become a senior paralegal?
BLS does not define a senior paralegal level or publish separate pay for one. What the sources do document is specialization — O*NET’s titles for the occupation include litigation, real estate and immigration paralegals — and voluntary certification, which typically requires an exam with eligibility based on education and work experience and is preferred or required by some employers.
What can a paralegal move into?
Three documented moves: legal records and information management, where BLS says experience as a paralegal or legal assistant is often required; compliance, which BLS lists as a similar occupation; and law practice, which requires a law degree and bar admission. BLS lists paralegals among occupations similar to lawyers.
How long does it take to go from paralegal to lawyer?
BLS says becoming a lawyer usually takes 7 years of full-time study after high school: 4 years of undergraduate study, then 3 years of law school, followed by the bar exam. Paralegal experience does not replace those requirements; most states require a J.D. from an accredited law school.
