Lawyers Resume Example

On the first pass, a legal hiring manager sees your bar admission, current employer, practice label, and the first two bullets beneath your most recent role. Most lawyer resumes fail because those bullets say “advised clients,” “drafted agreements,” and “conducted legal research” without identifying the transaction, regulatory exposure, forum, business unit, or result. The myth is that legal employers will infer sophistication from a firm name or law school. Reality: they screen for evidence that you have already handled the matters their team needs covered.

Another myth is that confidentiality prevents specificity. It does not. Don’t name a confidential client or disclose privileged strategy; do state that you led due diligence for a $400M cross-border acquisition, negotiated SaaS agreements supporting a healthcare platform, or managed outside counsel in a multi-district product-liability portfolio. A resume that lists every practice area—corporate governance, M&A, contract negotiation, regulatory compliance, risk management, legal research, due diligence, and litigation management—looks unfocused unless each area is anchored to work you actually owned. Put jurisdiction, active bar status, and practice concentration where they cannot be missed.

For 2026, ATS searches increasingly reward terms many lawyers ignored a few years ago: AI governance, AI risk assessment, data privacy, cybersecurity incident response, model contracting, automated decision-making, and third-party risk. Use them only where your matters support them; keyword stuffing is obvious to legal reviewers. The counterintuitive truth is that the strongest legal resume is not the one that recites the most cases, contracts, or statutes. It is the one that selects a small number of representative matters and makes your level of authority unmistakable: originated, led, negotiated, advised the board, managed, or resolved. Don’t bury that authority under passive legal prose.
