Steps without their own occupation are described from the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook.
How do you become a senior sales representative?
BLS says promotion frequently comes as an assignment to a larger account or territory, where commissions are likely to be greater. Reps selling scientific or technical products generally need a bachelor’s degree, so a degree related to the product can open that higher-paying segment.
What can a sales representative move into?
Up: sales supervisor, district manager, sales manager or vice president of sales for reps with good sales records and leadership ability. Sideways, O*NET lists sales engineers, purchasing agents and buyers, advertising sales agents and technical sales representatives as related occupations.
How long does it take to become a sales manager?
BLS lists less than 5 years of related work experience as typical for sales managers, plus a bachelor’s degree, and notes that employers usually prefer several years of sales experience. New reps’ formal training programs may last up to 1 year.
