Translator Resume Example

Updated · By the OneTwo Resume editorial team · Salary data: BLS OES, May 2025

A translator resume is screened by project managers at language service providers, localization managers at companies, and direct clients such as law firms or hospitals. They look for language pairs and direction, subject specialization, tools and proof of quality. Put your pairs in the first line of the resume, with direction stated clearly: Spanish into English, English into Spanish. Most professional translators work into their native language, and a reader who sees "bilingual" without direction cannot tell what you deliver.

Specialize on the page. Translation is not one job. Legal translators handle contracts, court filings and immigration records; medical translators handle consent forms, patient materials and clinical documents; technical and software localizers handle manuals, user interface strings and help articles; marketing translators do transcreation. A translator resume that lists every domain looks like a generalist. Pick the two or three areas where you have real depth and the terminology to prove it, and show the documents you handled in each.

Write bullets that show volume, standard and outcome. Volume is words per day or per year, or the size of projects. Standard is your process: translation, editing and proofreading steps, ISO 17100 workflows, style guides, termbases, QA tools. Outcome is quality and reliability: low correction rates in client review, certified translations accepted by agencies, deadlines met, clients who returned. "Translated documents" says nothing. "Translated 2,500 words a day of court filings from Spanish into English and met every deadline for two years" tells a project manager what to expect.

List tools and credentials together. CAT tools such as memoQ, Trados or Phrase, QA tools such as Xbench, and experience with machine translation post-editing are routine requirements. Certifications such as ATA certification in a specific pair, or a translation degree, belong near the top. If you also interpret, list it as a separate skill with its setting, because interpreting and translation are tested differently and court or medical interpreting often requires its own certification. Finally, proofread the translator resume as if it were a paid file. A single typo, inconsistent capitalization or mixed date format is read as a sample of your work, and many agencies reject an application on that alone before they ever send a test translation.

What Hiring Managers Actually Look For

Project managers hire translators who deliver accurate work on time and need little correction. They read your pairs, domains and tools first, then decide whether to send a test. Most agencies give a short test translation in your domain, reviewed by a senior linguist for accuracy, terminology, grammar and style. A resume that names your specializations precisely gets you the right test, which is the one you can pass.

Reliability is the second filter. Agencies track on-time delivery and responsiveness, and direct clients care about confidentiality. Mention deadlines met, how you handle queries, and any confidentiality agreements or secure workflows you follow. Be honest about your daily capacity and your language direction; overpromising volume or accepting work into a non-native language leads to rejected files and lost clients, and translation is a small field where reputations travel.

Your Opening Pitch

Spanish-to-English and English-to-Spanish translator with 7 years of experience translating legal, healthcare and technical documents for language service providers and direct clients. ATA-certified for Spanish into English, with a translation degree and native-level fluency in both languages. Works in memoQ and Trados with translation memories, termbases and QA checks, and delivers about 2,500 words a day of edited translation. Known for accurate terminology, consistent style and on-time delivery. Recent work built a 4,000-term medical glossary that cut a hospital client's review corrections by 40%.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should a translator resume include?

A header with your language pairs and direction, a summary naming two or three specializations, certifications such as ATA, a tools section with CAT and QA software, experience by client type with volume, subject matter and quality results, education in translation or a subject field, and a note that samples are available.

What skills should I put on a translator resume?

Your language pairs and direction, subject specializations such as legal, medical, technical or marketing, editing and proofreading, CAT tools like memoQ, Trados or Phrase, translation memory and terminology management, QA tools, machine translation post-editing, research skills and deadline management. Add interpreting separately if you do it.

How do I write bullet points for a translator resume?

Show volume, process and quality. Weak: "Translated documents." Strong: "Translated 2,500 words a day of court filings from Spanish into English and met every deadline for two years." The numbers on this page are illustrations; use your own volumes and client feedback.

How do I write a translator resume with no experience?

List translation coursework, internships, volunteer translation for nonprofits or community groups, and any bilingual work in jobs such as customer service or healthcare. Include a short portfolio of sample translations, your CAT tool training and your language direction. Many agencies will test you before assigning paid work.

What education does a translator need?

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level education for interpreters and translators. Native-level command of the target language matters most, and certification such as ATA certification in a specific language pair adds credibility. Court and medical interpreting have separate certification paths.

Should I list interpreting on a translator resume?

Yes, but separately. Translation is written and interpreting is spoken, and clients hire for them differently. List interpreting experience with its setting, such as community, medical or conference, and any certifications. If the job is translation only, keep interpreting brief so your translation skills stay in focus.

How can I make my translator resume stand out?

State language direction and specializations clearly, show volume and quality results, and list your tools. Offer a short sample in the client's domain. Make the resume flawless; a translator resume is the first piece of your writing a project manager reads.
