Robotics Engineer Resume Example

Updated · By the OneTwo Resume editorial team · Salary data: BLS OES, May 2025

A Robotics Engineer resume has one job: show that you can make a machine do a useful task reliably. The role is the engineer role. It means degree-level design work on kinematics, motion planning, perception, control and software, usually with a bachelor's or advanced degree behind it. It is not the same as a robotics technician, who installs, maintains and repairs robots on the floor. Some postings blend the two, so read the duties. If the posting asks you to design a planner or tune a controller, you are writing for an engineer. If it asks you to swap parts and run diagnostics, write for a technician.

Open with the kind of system you have worked on. A six-axis arm in a cell, a collaborative robot beside a person, a mobile base in a warehouse and a research manipulator are different jobs, and a hiring manager wants to see yours first. Then name the stack in plain terms: ROS 2, C++, Python, MoveIt 2, a lidar or camera pipeline, a simulator. Keep the list honest. Tools you have shipped with belong at the top. Tools you tried once belong lower or nowhere.

Write bullets that carry scale, standard and outcome. Scale is the number of robots, cells, sensors, test picks or hours of field operation. Standard is the cycle time target, the calibration error, the safety standard such as ISO 10218 or ISO/TS 15066, or the test plan you worked to. Outcome is what improved: success rate, uptime, commissioning time, fault count. If you only have a lab or class result, say that plainly and give the measurement. A pick success rate on a stated number of trials is better than the word "robust."

Show the full path from simulation to hardware. Many candidates can run a planner in Gazebo, Isaac Sim or MuJoCo. Fewer can describe bringing the same code up on a real arm, finding that timing, calibration or a cable broke the assumption, and fixing it. One bullet that names a hardware problem and how you found it does more than five lines of buzzwords. Mention drivers, buses such as EtherCAT or CAN, and sensor synchronization when you have done that work.

If you are changing careers or just graduating, build a projects section. List competitions, capstone builds, lab work and open-source contributions with the hardware, your role and the measured result. Include a repository link and a short video if you have them. Add coursework in dynamics, control and computer vision only after the projects, and keep safety work visible, since cells that share space with people are judged on it. Keep the layout clean, with no photo, and match the language of the posting where it is true.

What Hiring Managers Actually Look For

Managers hiring a Robotics Engineer check first whether you have put code on real hardware. A simulator result is useful, but they look for the sentence that says what happened when the same software met a real arm, camera or mobile base. They then check your depth in one area: planning, perception, control or integration. A resume that claims all four at an expert level reads as thin, so name the part you owned.

They also look for safety awareness. If the robot works near people, a mention of ISO 10218, ISO/TS 15066, risk assessment, speed and force limits or an emergency stop design shows you understand that the job is more than getting a demo to run. Expect a technical screen with kinematics, coordinate transforms or a debugging scenario, and a conversation about a system you built. Bring numbers you can defend: trials, cycle time, uptime, calibration error. Links to a repository, a thesis or a video of the robot running are welcome, because they let a reviewer see the work rather than read about it.

Summary That Opens Doors

Robotics Engineer with 6 years of experience designing and integrating robot cells and mobile platforms, using ROS 2, C++ and Python. Builds motion planning, perception and control stacks, validates them in Gazebo and Isaac Sim, then brings them up on real hardware. Has shipped 12 collaborative and mobile systems to customer sites, working to ISO 10218 and ISO/TS 15066 safety requirements. Recent work raised pick success on a vision-guided bin-picking cell from 91% to 97% and cut commissioning time per cell from six weeks to four through simulation-first testing.

Pro Tip: Customize this summary to match the specific job description you're applying for.

Proven Impact Statements

1

Designed a ROS 2 motion planning pipeline with MoveIt 2 for a six-axis arm in a palletizing cell, meeting a 9-second cycle time target and cutting collision-related stops from 14 to 2 per month.

2

Integrated an RGB-D camera and a learned detection model in PyTorch for bin picking, calibrated hand-eye transforms to under 2 mm error, and raised pick success from 91% to 97% on 5,000 test picks.

3

Built a Gazebo and Isaac Sim digital twin of a warehouse cell, replayed 300 recorded failure cases, and found 11 planner bugs before hardware bring-up, which shortened on-site commissioning by two weeks.

4

Tuned joint and Cartesian controllers on a collaborative robot, ran a risk assessment against ISO 10218 and ISO/TS 15066 with the safety lead, and documented speed and force limits that passed the customer audit.

5

Brought up a mobile manipulator with lidar SLAM and Nav2, fixed time-synchronization and TF issues across 4 sensors, and reached 99.2% localization uptime over a 60-day field trial.

6

Wrote C++ real-time drivers for a custom gripper over EtherCAT and CAN, added fault detection and watchdogs, and reduced unplanned gripper faults from 9 to 1 across 12 deployed units.

7

Set up CI with hardware-in-the-loop tests and rosbag regression runs on 40 recorded scenarios, which caught regressions before release and cut field rollbacks to zero over two quarters.

8

Led field testing at 3 customer sites with a team of 4 technicians, logged 800 hours of operation, and turned the failure log into a prioritized fix list that raised mean time between failures from 120 to 210 hours.

Bullet Point Formula: Start with a strong action verb, describe the task, and end with a measurable result. Example from this role: "Designed a ROS 2 motion planning pipeline with MoveIt 2 for a six-axis arm in a palletizing cell, me..."

Frequently Asked Questions

What should a Robotics Engineer resume include?

Include a short summary naming your robot types and years of experience, experience or project bullets with scale, standard and outcome, a skills section grouped by planning, perception, control, simulation and hardware, education, and any safety standards you have worked to. Add a link to a repository or demo video when you have one.

What skills should I put on a Robotics Engineer resume?

Typical postings ask for ROS or ROS 2, C++ and Python, kinematics and motion planning, computer vision or lidar perception, control, and simulation in tools such as Gazebo, Isaac Sim or MuJoCo. Add hardware bring-up, calibration and safety standards if you have them. List only what you have used on a real project.

How do I write bullet points for a Robotics Engineer resume?

Start with an action verb, then give scale, the standard you worked to and the result: how many robots, cells or trials, what cycle time or error target applied, and what improved. The examples here are illustrations, so replace them with your own measured numbers. If you lack a percentage, use counts such as units shipped or hours of field testing.

How do I write a Robotics Engineer resume with no experience or as a career changer?

Build a projects section from capstone work, lab research, competitions and personal builds. For each one, name the hardware, the software stack, your own role and a measured result. Software engineers moving into robotics can show ROS 2 contributions, simulation work and a small hardware build, which proves you can cross from code to a physical system.

Do I need a degree or certification to be a Robotics Engineer?

Most postings ask for a bachelor's degree in robotics, mechanical, electrical or computer engineering or a related field, and many research or perception roles prefer a master's or doctorate. Certifications are rarely required. Safety training for ISO 10218 or functional safety is a useful extra when the work involves collaborative robots.

How do I list robotics projects, competitions and hardware?

Give each project one line for the goal, one for the hardware and stack, and one for your role and measured result. Name the robot, sensors, controllers and simulator you used. Competitions count when you state the task, your subsystem and the outcome. Put the strongest or most recent projects first and link the code.

How can I make my Robotics Engineer resume stand out?

Show the path from simulation to hardware, name the part of the system you personally owned, and give measured results such as pick success, uptime or commissioning time. Mention safety standards when the robot works near people. Add a repository or video link, keep the resume to one or two clean pages, and match the posting's language where it is true.
