Buyer Resume Example

The word buyer covers two related jobs, and a buyer resume should make clear which one you do. Retail and merchandise buyers choose what a store sells: assortment, pricing, promotions, sell-through and margin. Corporate and industrial buyers, often called purchasing agents, source the materials, parts and services a business needs: suppliers, contracts, lead times and total cost. Many skills overlap, such as negotiation, forecasting and vendor management, but hiring managers look for different evidence. Name your type, category and annual spend in the summary.
Then write bullets that combine spend, action and result. Spend shows scale: the dollars or units you manage, the number of SKUs or suppliers. Action shows how you work: competitive bids, renegotiated terms, new supplier qualification, reorder point changes, open-to-buy plans. Result shows what changed: cost savings with a baseline, lower stockouts, higher inventory turns, better on-time delivery, improved margin or sell-through. "Responsible for purchasing" says nothing. "Managed 1,400 SKUs across two categories and cut stockouts on top items with new reorder points" tells a purchasing manager exactly what you can handle.
Be careful with savings claims. Purchasing managers know that a savings figure means little without a baseline and a method. Say whether the savings came from price, freight, volume terms, specification changes or switching suppliers, and over what period. If you can, pair cost results with service results; cutting price while causing stockouts is not a win, and experienced readers will look for both.
Group skills by sourcing, planning, systems and relationships. Sourcing: RFQs and RFPs, negotiation, contract terms, supplier qualification. Planning: forecasting, replenishment, safety stock, open-to-buy, assortment. Systems: SAP or another ERP, SAP Ariba or Coupa, Excel modeling. Relationships: supplier scorecards, quarterly business reviews, working with finance, operations and merchandising. Certifications such as CPSM from ISM or CSCP from ASCM help for corporate purchasing roles. Keep the buyer resume to one page early in your career, and let it grow to two only when spend and scope justify it. A short line on the categories you know best also helps a hiring manager route your buyer resume to the right team.

What Hiring Managers Actually Look For
Purchasing and merchandising managers hire buyers who protect margin and service at the same time. They read your type, category and spend first, then look for results with context: savings with a baseline, fewer stockouts, better turns, stronger supplier performance. A buyer who shows both cost and availability results is trusted with bigger categories.
Expect case questions. Interviewers may ask how you would respond to a supplier's price increase, how you would choose between two bids, or how you would plan inventory for a promotion. Some give an Excel exercise on reorder points or open-to-buy. Be ready to explain the numbers on your buyer resume, including what you controlled directly and what the team achieved together. Strong negotiators are also good partners, so describe how you kept supplier relationships healthy.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should a buyer resume include?
A header, a short summary naming your buying type, category and annual spend, experience bullets with spend, savings, service and inventory results, a skills section covering sourcing, planning, systems and supplier management, certifications such as CPSM or CSCP, and education. Make clear whether you are a retail or corporate buyer.
What skills should I put on a buyer resume?
Negotiation, supplier sourcing and qualification, purchase orders, forecasting and replenishment, open-to-buy and assortment planning for retail roles, RFQs and contract terms for corporate roles, supplier scorecards, cost analysis, ERP systems such as SAP, sourcing tools such as Coupa or SAP Ariba, and advanced Excel.
How do I write bullet points for a buyer resume?
Combine spend, action and result. Weak: "Handled vendor orders." Strong: "Managed purchases for 1,400 SKUs and lowered stockouts on top items by resetting reorder points from sales and lead-time data." Give a baseline for any savings. The figures here are illustrations; use your own.
How do I become a buyer with no experience?
Start as an assistant buyer, purchasing assistant, inventory analyst or planner. On your resume, show Excel skills, any ordering or inventory work in retail or warehouse jobs, and coursework in supply chain or business. Describe negotiation or vendor contact you have handled, even on a small scale.
What education does a buyer need?
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level education for buyers and purchasing agents, with moderate-term on-the-job training. Degrees in business, supply chain or merchandising are common. Certifications such as CPSM from ISM or CSCP from ASCM are voluntary but valued.
What is the difference between a retail buyer and a purchasing agent resume?
A retail buyer resume emphasizes assortment, trends, sell-through, margin and open-to-buy. A purchasing agent resume emphasizes sourcing, contracts, supplier performance, lead times and total cost for materials or services. If you have done both, lead with the one that matches the posting and keep the other short.
How can I make my buyer resume stand out?
State your type and spend up front, pair cost results with service results, and explain how you achieved savings. Name your ERP and sourcing tools, and show supplier relationship work. A precise buyer resume reads like a well-prepared negotiation.
