Give the owner options with quantified impacts and a recommendation. Strong candidates also identify what must be issued as an architect's supplemental instruction versus a formal owner change.

Assume yes, even if the initial interview is labeled conversational. Lead with two or three projects where your role is unmistakable, then show plans, sections, model views, and one technical problem rather than only finished photography. State the phase, your authority level, team structure, budget, and what changed because of your decision. A polished image without evidence of code, coordination, or construction judgment will not carry a technical panel.
Be technical enough to prove the design can survive permits, pricing, and construction. Even design-led studios will test how you move from massing to envelope, structure, egress, and material detail, especially for project architect roles. Tie technical choices back to spatial experience and performance: daylight autonomy, embodied carbon, thermal comfort, acoustic privacy, or circulation clarity. Do not hide behind concepts when asked why a detail, grid, or facade system was selected.
Give a range anchored to scope, licensure, market, and project responsibility, not the national median alone. Say, “Given this role's responsibility for [project phase, BIM coordination, CA, or client leadership], I am targeting $X to $Y in base salary; I understand the broader Architect market runs from about $55,900 to $142,050, and I would weigh the full package.” For a mid-level architect, a range positioned credibly within the firm's city and your experience is stronger than naming the $89,560 national median as a demand. Do not pretend every role in that broad national range is comparable.
Ask how the firm measures project health at SD, DD, CDs, and CA; who owns the BIM execution plan and consultant coordination; and how principals review fee, scope creep, and construction-phase risk. Ask for a recent example of a project where the team changed course after an estimate, code review, or contractor input. You can also ask which decisions this role can make independently and which require principal approval. Avoid ending with generic culture questions when the panel has spent an hour testing your project judgment.
LEED AP can help, particularly in civic, higher education, healthcare, and institutional work, but it does not substitute for demonstrated performance analysis. Firms care more about whether you can explain an energy-model decision, material carbon tradeoff, commissioning requirement, or certification documentation process. If you are not accredited, show one project where you owned a sustainability deliverable and can quantify the result. If you are LEED AP, be prepared to explain exactly which credits you led rather than treating the credential as the accomplishment.
