What a free scan can and can't tell you

Every checker approximates. Real Applicant Tracking Systems differ by vendor and configuration, so no free (or paid) tool can promise "this passes." What good checkers catch reliably is the mechanical failure class — the multi-column layout that parses out of order, the skills trapped in a graphic, the missing standard headers, the absent keywords — which is where most silent rejections come from. A checker that reports specifics you can fix is useful; one that reports only a scary number is marketing.

Is an ATS resume scanner the same as an ATS resume checker?

Yes — "ATS resume scanner," "ATS resume checker," "resume scanner" and "ATS scanner" all describe the same kind of tool, and the four ranked below are the ones worth running free. The vocabulary splits by vendor rather than by product: Jobscan calls its output a scan, Resume Worded calls it a score, our own tool calls it a check. Nothing about the underlying job differs — each one parses your resume the way an applicant tracking system would, then reports what it could not read and which of the posting's terms are missing.

One distinction is real, and it is not the word: some scanners need a job description and some do not. A match scanner (Jobscan, Teal) compares your resume against one specific posting and scores the overlap. A document scanner (ours, Resume Worded) grades the resume on its own for structure, parseability and content quality. 1. Jobscan — best free match report (5/month)

Jobscan's free tier includes 5 free resume scans per month against a job description, with ATS and recruiter findings. It's the deepest free analysis in the category, and 5 a month is enough to check your top applications. The upsell to unlimited scans is not cheap ($49.95 a month, or $89.95 billed every 3 months), but the free slice is genuinely the best free thing in this list.

2. OneTwoResume Resume Checker — best uncapped document check (ours)

Our checker scans formatting, section structure, keywords, and content quality without a scan cap; a free account unlocks the full breakdown and the same score runs automatically on every resume in the builder. Disclosure applies: we make it, and its natural upsell is our own Pro tier. Judge it by whether its findings are specific enough to act on.

3. Resume Worded — best free second opinion

Score My Resume returns a free overall score; per Resume Worded's Pro page, the entire report, including the line-by-line analysis, is Pro ($49 a month, $99 per quarter or $229 per year). As a free second opinion to confirm another checker's verdict, it's well regarded and quick.

4. Teal — good basic analysis inside a free workspace

Teal's free plan includes basic resume analysis and the top 5 keywords from a job description (unlimited keyword matching and the full analysis are Teal+, $13 a week on its weekly plan). If you're already tracking applications in Teal, it's the convenient check; as a standalone checker it's lighter than the two above.

Behind paywalls: Kickresume and Enhancv

Both list their ATS checks only on paid plans (Kickresume $8–24 a month depending on billing period; Enhancv $69 per quarter, about $23 a month — its free plan lasts 7 days). Reasonable products, but not answers to "free checker" — listed so you don't discover the paywall after uploading.

The sensible free workflow

• 1. Run your resume through one uncapped document checker for structure and formatting findings.
• 2. For your top target jobs, spend Jobscan free scans on real match reports against the actual postings.
• 3. Fix what both agree on first — consensus findings are almost always real.
• 4. Re-scan after fixing. Pay nobody unless a specific limit is actually blocking you.
